The Latin vocabulary trainer
In short
The Disce ludens vocabulary trainer tests you on 1,565 Latin words: 574 from Disce ludens I and 991 from Disce ludens II. It works as a flashcard box with seven stages, tests both directions and takes the weakest words first. 20 words are free; all of them are available from €9 a year.
How a session works
The app shows a word, you type in the meaning and get feedback straight away. If the answer is right at the first attempt, the word moves up one stage. If it isn’t, the app tells you immediately; with “Solution” you see the meaning. There are no error points in the vocabulary trainer – but a revealed word starts again at stage 1.
For words with several meanings, every correct one counts: for adhuc, bis jetzt is accepted as well as bisher (both mean “until now”). The app is in German: exercises, hints and meanings are German, as in the original.
Seven stages, from daily to half-yearly
| Stage | Name in the app | due again after |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | täglich (daily) | 1 day |
| 2 | halbwöchentlich (twice a week) | 3–4 days |
| 3 | wöchentlich (weekly) | 7 days |
| 4 | halbmonatlich (fortnightly) | 14 days |
| 5 | monatlich (monthly) | 30 days |
| 6 | vierteljährlich (quarterly) | 90 days |
| 7 | halbjährlich (half-yearly) | 180 days |
Always in view: what is due
Before each session the card box shows how many words are in which stage, how many are due today and tomorrow and how many have never been tested. Latin → German and German → Latin have boxes of their own. That way you can see whether your vocabulary is on track for the next test.
