Disce ludens for Latin teachers
In short
Disce ludens comes from a colleague: Thomas Wegener developed the exercises over 30 years of teaching Latin at the Dillmann-Gymnasium in Stuttgart (a German academic secondary school) and tried them out in his own classes. Teachers use the 62 lessons to match the textbook chapter – in class, as homework or for differentiation. An overview for teachers is planned.
How to use Disce ludens
- In class: after introducing a topic, practise the matching lesson in the computer room or on tablets. Which lesson fits which topic.
- As homework: “lesson 17 up to card 20” – every lesson can be opened and resumed on its own.
- For differentiation: students who are unsure revise the basics in Disce ludens I; faster ones translate sentences based on Caesar in Verte ludens.
- Vocabulary: the vocabulary trainer with 1,565 words and custom card boxes, for example for the next class test.
Teaching method from the classroom
- Hints instead of solutions: graded hints are free, the solution costs error points.
- Fair checking: answers are checked on the server; the solutions are not in the browser.
- Record: after every lesson students see their questions, mistakes and time.
- Two views: a modern view and the original from 1998 – switchable, without anything changing in the exercises.
The app is in German: exercises, hints and meanings are German, as in the original.
What is still to come
Planned are an overview for teachers with the class’s results and sharing custom card boxes with the class. Until then, students see their record on their own device.
To get to know it: with an account you can test everything for 7 days. For the class there is the school licence.
