Latin at school: how parents can help
In short
Parents do not need to know Latin to help. Fixed practice times, interest in progress and acting in time when marks drop matter more. A learning app can take over the daily practice – for children it should have no ads and no tracking. Disce ludens does exactly that: the demo needs no email address, and Google Analytics only loads for people who choose “Adults” at the start and consent – never for school students or parents.
How to spot problems early
- Vocabulary tests go worse even though the words were “learned” – usually the revision is missing.
- When translating, words are strung together without paying attention to the endings.
- Grammar terms such as subject, accusative or predicate are shaky, even in their own language.
- Homework takes a long time or gets put off.
Helping without knowing Latin
- Fixed times: 15 to 20 minutes on five days a week do more than one long session before a test.
- Testing vocabulary: the vocabulary notebook is enough for that – or the app’s flashcard box, which picks the words that are due.
- Ask for explanations: a child who can explain to a parent what an ablative is has understood it.
- Talk early: when marks drop, talk to the teacher before the gaps grow large.
What parents should look for in learning apps
- Ads and tracking: there are no ads in Disce ludens. Google Analytics only loads for people who choose “Adults” at the start and consent in the banner; never for school students, parents, teachers or anyone who gives no answer. For everyone else there are only our own anonymous statistics on the game server, with no data passed to third parties.
- Data: the demo needs no email address. The name for the log stays on the device.
- Costs: clear and possible as a one-time payment: €89 for everything or €19 per year per programme, no hidden subscription.
- Teaching method: hints instead of solutions. The solution costs error points, so that children think for themselves first.
The app is in German: exercises, hints and meanings are German, as in the original.

What Disce ludens does
- Takes over the daily practice, even if the parents know no Latin.
- Has no ads and no tracking for children.
- Shows mistakes and time in the log after every lesson.
What it doesn’t do
- Does not replace talking to the teacher.
- Does not find out on its own where the gaps from earlier years are.
- Does not send parents reports by email.
Frequently asked questions
How can I help my child with Latin if I don’t know Latin myself?
With fixed practice times, testing vocabulary and showing interest: ask your child to explain what they are doing at the moment. For the actual practice a learning app with hints is a good fit.
When does my child need a Latin tutor?
When marks keep dropping over several tests despite regular practice, or when there are big gaps from earlier years. Before that, targeted daily practice often helps.
Is Disce ludens privacy-friendly for children?
Yes: the demo needs no email address, there are no ads, and Google Analytics never loads for school students or parents – there are only our own anonymous statistics, with no data passed to third parties. The name stays on the device.
